Part I: A Shared History—Stonewall and the Trans Pioneers
Popular culture often credits the Stonewall Riots of 1969 to gay men, but the catalyst was overwhelmingly transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals, particularly two Black trans women: Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera.
LGB (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual): Refers to sexual orientation (who you are attracted to).
T (Transgender): Refers to gender identity (who you know yourself to be regarding male, female, or non-binary).
The Connection: You can be trans and gay, trans and straight, or trans and bi. For example, a trans woman who loves men may identify as straight, while a trans man who loves men may identify as gay.
